Giacomo Puccini's Madama Butterfly
Puccini's unforgettable heroine risks everything for love, but once betrayed, chooses the only honorable path.
Puccini's heartbreaking tale of innocence, betrayal and sacrifice – the glorious Madama Butterfly returns to the Straz Center’s Morsani stage for Opera Tampa’s 20th Anniversary season. In a bold and beautiful production, with the exotic allure of turn-of-the-century Japan, American Naval officer, Lieutenant B.F. Pinkerton, sets the wheels of tragedy in motion when he marries a beautiful young Japanese girl.
Soprano Yunah Lee makes her debut with Opera Tampa as Japanese geisha Cio-Cio San (Butterfly) in a role that has won her critical international acclaim.
Richard Troxell stole our hearts as Rodolfo in La Bohéme. He returns to Opera Tampa as the handsome, but irresponsible B.F. Pinkerton.
“... outstanding singing and acting by Yunah Lee as Cio-Cio-San (Butterfly) make this Butterfly connect on a high emotional level with the audience ... Yunah Lee's “Un Bel Di” breathes new life into the aria." (Denver Performing Arts Examiner)
This production is underwritten by Dr. Zena Lansky and Mr. Warren Rodgers
Madama Butterfly will be sung in Italian with English translations projected above the stage. Maestro Lipton will lead an international cast – including Yunah Lee as Cio Cio San – along with the Opera Tampa Orchestra and Chorus.
